RoboSoccer

Excavator Online Trajectory

Autonomous excavation is a research goal of the Terex O&K Mining company. Therefore a first step to is to research methods to aid human excavator operators by calculating trajectories for recurring motions resulting in a semi-automated excavation. The Robotics Research Institute developed a algorithm specially adapted to the demands of hydraulic excavators to calculate a boom trajectory online during execution.

Broken Tooth Detection

Excavators produced by the Terex O&K Mining GmbH are often deployed for strip mining such as moving heavy stone debris. In the process its not uncommon that a tooth of the bucket breaks and gets lost in the debris. Since the material of the bucket is harder than common stone such a tooth can servely damage a stonecusher and has to be sorted out before. To shorten the time of production stops our institute researched methods of optical monitoring of the tooth condition were researched. Thereby the special focus has been to develop algorithms to apply methods of computer vision despite the difficult environmental conditions of a strip mine.

RobAs

In addition to the high precision of Robotic Manipulators their universal sensor interfaces lead to a variety of different applications in measurements and data collection. In cooperation with Siemens VDO IP/HVAC the our institute has developed and implemented algorithmic methods that allows and efficient and precise evaluation of the collected data to apply a better quality surveillance of prototypes and production.

XMLAs

To evaluate prototype and to guaranty production quality Siemens VDO is testing their products under different environmental conditions with the help of a longtime tests in a climate cabin. These tests create a huge amount of data so that standard computational evaluation methods cannot be applied. Therefore the XML-As project focused on the efficient processing of the collected data.

Current activities:

Expansion of the D-Grid Foundation for Commercial Use

The goal of this project is to expand the existing D-Grid infrastructure with an interface for commercial compute Clouds. This new interface, which is provided by fluid Operations' eCloudManager, will enable D-Grid to expand its customer base to include SMEs, thereby achieving an economically sustainable Grid. To reach this goal, D-Grid will rely on the fluid Operations eCloudManager to provide a Self-Service component which will allow customers to deploy their applications, manage their deployments and monitor their Grid usage. Similarly, D-Grid operators can use the eCloudManager to manage resource provisioning, data center operations, and billing and accounting.

The project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and realized in cooperation with fluid Operations GmbH. Project start was on 01.06.2010 and the duration is 24 month.

Collaborative Climate Community Data and Processing Grid (C3Grid)

The C3Grid project aims to provide a comprehensive Grid-based environment for the German earth system research community to allow the effective analysis of high-volume model and observation data sets by ensuring automated and distributed processing between the participating institutes.

High Energy Physics Community Grid (HEP-CG)

The scope of the HEP-CG project is the performance advancement of computational and data grids in the domain of particle and astro particle physics through an optimized data management on the basis of a generic, scalable storage element with grid interfaces and upon superimposed job scheduling.

D-Grid Integration Project (DGI)

The DGI integrates all developments from the different community projects into one common D-Grid platform. This platform, consisting of middleware solutions, certificate and policy management and resource provision will be offered as services to the German scientific community..

CoreGRID Network of Excellence

CoreGRID is the European Research Network on Foundations, Software Infrastructures and Applications for large scale distributed, Grid and Peer-to-Peer Technologies and brings together a critical mass of researchers from different institutions spread across many European countries; 42 institutions from 19 different countries are involved.
