  • Walking
    In diffence to rolling robots walking robots have the advantage to be able to move through rough terrain and to better perform in environments designed for human beeings. These tend to include objects, like stairs, which become obstacles for rolling robots. The research focus on different approaches to walking algorithms for 4- and 2-legged locomotions. Different techniques of evolutionary algoriths and ZMP based motion control are applied to successfully generate walking patterns.
  • Cognition
    Since every decision an autonomous robot has to make is based on information collected with help of sensors, cognition is a central research area in modern robotics. Accelelerometer, gyroscops and joint positon sensors aid the robot in knowing its internal status, posture and orientation. External informations about the environment are mostly based on visual sensory as cameras. The image processing has to be done in real-time to allow smooth traking of fast motions.
  • Behavior
    Hardware of mobile robots becomes more and more powerful, resulting in an improved operability. This includes both, the capability to retrieve environmental informations with the help of sensors and the capability to intreract with the environment with the help of actuators. Thus the task complexity of autonomous robots increased drasticly druning the last years. The Robotics Research Insitutes develops methods to specify these tasks in a way, that allows the programmer to easily specify complex duties and gives the robot the ability to adapt its behaviour acording to the requirements.
